EF star’s transfer approved

GREEN TREE — As a sophomore last season, Lindsey Smith pitched Elizabeth Forward’s softball team to the WPIAL Class AAA Section 4 title, the WPIAL Class AAA championship game and as far as the PIAA quarterfinals.

Smith was on the mound for all of her team’s 18 wins with nine shutouts.

Despite having two years remaining, Smith has pitched her last game for the Warriors.

Smith’s transfer to Serra Catholic was approved at Monday’s monthly WPIAL Board of Control meeting.

“I have no comment,” she answered.

Smith’s replacement is expected to be junior Kristen Hawkins, who was one of the WPIAL’s premier catchers in 2007.

Meanwhile, the WPIAL approved the transfer of six others to Serra including Randall Coleman and Davida Penn from Penn Hills, Nicholas Rossi from Central Catholic, Robert Blotzer from Kiski Prep and Grant Tillman from Glen Mills.

The WPIAL, however, denied the transfer of Soobyung Lee from Steel Valley to Serra and tabled the transfer of basketball player Karmyn Gouch from Mt. Alvernia to Serra.

Here are some of the other transfers approved:

– Tyler Kershaw from Frazier to Monessen.

– Christopher Wild from Bethel Park and Caroline Greiner from Keystone Oaks to Seton-LaSalle.

– Brian Grady from Laurel Highlands to Uniontown.

– Matt Carson from Monaca to Blackhawk.

– Jaclyn Zellonis from Calvary Academy to Butler.

– Joe Hages from Quigley to Center.

– James Brose from Carrick, Nicholas Martzell from East Allegheny, Doug Walter from Allderdice, Joe Williams from Shadyside Academy to Central Catholic.

– Carly Klasnic from Latrobe and Genevieve Szekely from Serra to Greensburg Central Catholic.

– Dominick Costantin from Central Catholic and John Runco from Vincentian to Hampton.

– Kyle Arendsen from Central Catholic to Moon.

– Tyler Staniski from Shaler to North Catholic.

The WPIAL denied an attendance waiver to Stephen Shamay at Bentworth and age waivers to Elmer Kelly-Bell at Northgate and Dan Zimmerman at Waynesburg.
