Elton John, in London Monday to receive a Q Award for songwriting, criticized Madonna for lip-synching.

"Anyone who lip-synchs in public on stage when you pay $135 to see them should be shot," he said.

But Madonna - who had been nominated for Best Live Act -- did not win the award. It went to Muse.

Liz Rosenberg, Madonna's press agent, denied the "Material Girl" used lip-synching when performing in concert, the BBC reported.

"She sang every note on her Re-invention tour live," she said. "Nor does she spend her time trashing other artists."

John noted his remarks about Madonna would drop him from Madonna's Christmas card list. But Rosenberg later said, "Elton John remains on her Christmas card list whether he is nice ... or naughty." said Rosenberg.

Other Q Music Magazine Awards included: Red Hot Chili Peppers for the Best Act in the World Today, U2 for the Q Icon Award and Roxy Music for the Q Lifetime Achievement Award.
