'Emily Rose' pulled in double the expected crowd

Doing double the business industry forecasters anticipated, "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" easily tops the national and local box-office charts for what is otherwise an abysmal mid-September week for movie attendance. The film is based on a true story about a Catholic priest who was tried for the death of a 19-year-old girl who had suffered from a combination of circumstances that included an exorcism. Tom Wilkinson plays the priest, Scott Campbell the church-going Protestant prosecuting attorney and Laura Linney the agnostic defense attorney. "The Man," which opened poorly nationwide, fared only slightly better here, doing just enough to place second in a closely bunched field of distant runners up. The action comedy features Eugene Levy as a nerdy dental equipment salesman who gets roped into a sting operation involving hard-nosed government agent Samuel L. Jackson. No. 3 here is the thriller "Red Eye," off 42 percent. Fourth locally is "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," tripping 50 percent. "The Constant Gardener" is grabbing the over-30 audience. It's running fifth, down 40 percent. "Transporter 2" takes sixth spot here, down 33 percent. "March of the Penguins" holds onto seventh place, down 36 percent. "Wedding Crashers" falls 51 percent and lands in eighth place. Its good news is that it just became the fifth 2005 release to pass the $200 million mark in domestic revenue. "Brothers Grimm," which may never recoup its $88 million cost, much less promotion and advertising costs, is in ninth place with a 59 percent dip. "An Unfinished Life" is on only two screens but doing well enough to rank 10th. It's hard to believe that a former top draw such as Robert Redford has a commercial film in such limited release -- just 139 sites nationally. He plays a rural Wyoming resident who is tending to bear-mauled friend Morgan Freeman when estranged daughter-in-law Jennifer Lopez turns up with her daughter, whom Redford didn't know existed. Films scheduled to open Friday include "Lord of War," "Junebug," "Cronicas," "Venom," "Cry Wolf," "Just Like Heaven" and Ingmar Bergman's "Saraband." Additional Information:
