EPA names Intel best place for commuters

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Wednesday cited Intel Corp. as the best place to work for commuters.

The EPA survey covered Fortune 500 companies and recognized 69 for their environmental commitment to reduce air pollution and traffic congestion by offering subsidized transit or vanpool passes, telecommuting programs and shuttles for employees.

Following Intel, which offers commuter benefits to 92 percent of its employees, were Fannie Mae, Cisco Systems, USAA, Sun Microsystems, Oracle, Advanced Micro Devices, Texas Instruments, Safeco and EMC.

"Americans spend an average of 46 hours each year stuck in traffic," EPA said it its release. "Gridlock produces more than $63 billion in congestion costs per year. Companies that offer commuter benefits help curb these costs and make a significant contribution to the health and welfare of their employees."
