Everson Borough Council passed a motion to adopt a tentative balanced budget for 2014 at $192,280.

Members voted to advertise the budget and ordinance 186, setting the property tax at 5.2895 mills, which reflects no tax increase.

The budget is slated to be adopted at the next council meeting, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 16.

Council President Mike Banaszak reminded residents there is an ordinance against burning in the borough.

“There is no burning permitted in the borough limits,” Banaszak said.

Solicitor Mark Rowan said he is researching the borough's curfew ordinance in reference to residents' complaints about youths being out on the streets late at night.

“Right now they are giving them warnings,” Councilman Chuck Leighty said of borough police officers.

“That is fine until we are in line with what we have to do,” Rowan said of the warnings.

Banaszak said he is pleased with the extra work Everson volunteer firefighters have been doing for the borough, with the Halloween parade, hanging of Christmas lights, and the work they performed for the Veterans Day ceremony.

“These are extra things that they are doing that they are not obligated to do,” Banaszak said. “If it weren't for the members of the volunteer fire department, I really don't think that there would be as many things getting done.”

In other action, council:

• Passed a motion to allow East Huntingdon Township to join the Westmoreland/Fayette Municipal Authority.

• Reminded residents to keep sidewalks clear of ice and snow.

• Announced the community “Star Lite Night” will be held at 6 p.m. Nov. 29 at the Everson firemen's social hall.

• Announced the 2014 reorganization meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 6 in the borough building.
