Everson police are investigating a rash of thefts involving borough property, including a 30-foot-long flagpole awaiting installation in Centennial Park.

Thieves stole the mast from outside the borough building sometime between March 23 and Monday, council President Mike Banaszak said.

“The flagpole was in the municipal lot next to the borough building since autumn,” Banaszak said. “We intended to install it at Centennial Park. We were ready to do that and the flagpole wasn’t there.”

The pole was donated to the borough. It is 4 inches in diameter and weighs 300 pounds.

“It would be very difficult to walk away with,” Banaszak said. “It was delivered to us on a flat-bed truck. We’re just speculating, but we think someone saw it for the metal value and took it for that. This was something that was planned.”

The pole is made from aluminum, which is worth $1.30 per pound, according to the London Metal Exchange. The retail value of the pole is $400.

Last week, someone stole two pedestrian crosswalk markers from intersections in the borough. The markers had been in place for about a month and weigh 60 pounds each.

The borough obtained them through the PennDOT Pedestrian Safety Program. They are valued at about $75 each.

Also missing are two “no parking” signs from the Centennial Park area. They are valued at $20 each.

“We’re pretty sure it’s kids,” Banaszak said. “We have a lead on the pedestrian crosswalk signs. But the others• We don’t have a clue at this point.”

The borough is offering a $50 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the thefts. All information will remain confidential. Call borough police at 724-887-4870.

“We could either keep this stuff to ourselves and hope for the best,” Banaszak said, “or make it public and let people know what is going on.”
