American Eagle Oufitters Inc. has named a former chief merchandising officer and co-chief executive to a new creative director's position.

The clothing retailer said this morning that Roger Markfield will take on a full-time role as vice chairman, executive creative director. He'll report to CEO Jim O'Donnell and work with the AE brand's creative leaders in design, merchandising, marketing and other areas.

The South Side-based company, like many retailers, has struggled with falling sales in recent months and over the holidays..

"I am extremely pleased to have Roger's full-time commitment as we respond to the current business challenges, O'Donnell said, noting Markfield's experience with the flagship AE brand "will be instrumental as we look to strengthen the women's business."

Markfield has worked with the company since 1993. He was chief merchandising officer from 1995 to 2002, and has served on the board of directors since 1999. He was co-CEO from December 2002 to November 2003, and vice chairman from 2003 to 2006.
