Ex-Pitt stars among summer league free agents

Two former Pitt basketball stars have agreed to join NBA summer league rosters.

Guard Vonteego Cummings, a three-year NBA veteran who ranks among the top 10 all-time in three categories for the Panthers, will play for the New Jersey Nets' team in the Pepsi Pro Summer League in Orlando, Fla. And forward Chevon Troutman, the second-leading scorer for Pitt two seasons ago, will play for the Chicago Bulls' team in the Orlando league.

Cummings, who last played in the NBA for the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2001-02 season, ranks 10th all-time in scoring at Pitt with 1,581 points, fifth in assists (458) and second in steals (235) as a starter in 97 of 103 career games.

Cummings was selected in the first round of the 1999 NBA draft before being traded to Golden State, where he played his first two seasons.

Troutman, a 6-foot-7 forward, spent last season playing professionally in Italy.

Elsewhere, Patrick Beilein, who concluded his college career last season at West Virginia, has joined the Houston Rockets' team in the Toshiba Vegas Summer League in Las Vegas.

Beilein averaged 7.8 points and more than 25 minutes in 32 games last season, starting only once. He ranked third on the team in 3-point field goals with 63.

Three of Beilein's former teammates, including the potent All-Big East Conference tandem last season of center Kevin Pittsnogle and guard Mike Gansey, also are attempting to crack NBA rosters through summer league teams.

Pittsnogle, who led West Virginia in scoring (19.3 ppg) and Gansey (16.8) will remain teammates for at least another week on the Miami Heat's team in the Orlando league.

Also, D'Or Fischer, who split time with Pittsnogle at center for the Mountaineers two years ago, is a member of the Charlotte Bobcats' team in the Orlando league.
