Port Vue council honored its former police chief with a proclamation Wednesday.

Gary Cartia retired Aug. 1. He did not attend Wednesday's council meeting, but that did not stop council vice president Kenneth Hresko from reading the recognition into the record.

Cartia began his career as a patrolman on June 11, 1988, and became chief in January 2000.

Hresko called Cartia “one of the most respected leaders and icons of the borough of Port Vue (who) was well recognized over the years by many law enforcement organizations and received numerous awards, certifications and training to enhance his performance and duties.”

Other borough officials offered their personal and professional thanks to Cartia for his years of service.

“Gary's a good guy,” Councilman Frank Cortazzo, a former patrolman who worked with Cartia, said.

“It's a never-ending job,” police Chief Bryan Myers said. “I'm not too far behind (for retirement).”

Junior Councilor Brenna Pribanic was introduced Wednesday.

Brenna, 17, of Port Vue is a South Allegheny High School senior.

She said she hopes her time with council is a good learning experience.

All motions made Wednesday passed, 6-0. Councilman Brian Myers II was absent.

Council authorized Slack Overhead Doors to install an electric roll-up garage door on the salt shed at a cost of $8,100.

Council authorized Safe Guard Fence Co. to install fencing and a gate around the back side of Romine Field at a cost of $7,000.

Council approved advertising for two alternate crossing guards. Guards must be borough residents. Those interested should contact the borough office at 412-664-9323.

Chief Myers reminded residents the first day of school for South Allegheny School District is Tuesday. There will be extra patrols and strict enforcement of traffic laws. Myers said drivers should be careful, particularly around bus stops.
