Former state Rep. Kenneth W. Ruffing has been jailed on civil and criminal contempt of court charges for failure to pay several thousand dollars in support payments, Allegheny County Sheriff William P. Mullen said Thursday.

Ruffing, 41, a West Mifflin Democrat who represented the 38th Legislative District for eight years before being defeated in the 2006 primary election, surrendered to sheriff's deputies this week and was placed in the Allegheny County Jail, Mullen said.

Ruffing was convicted of driving while intoxicated in August 2007 and sentenced to the county's Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program, a type of probation for first-time offenders whose arrest records can be expunged after they complete the terms set by a judge.
