By early next year, a new family oriented restaurant may occupy the site of a former movie theater at the Eastgate Shopping Center in Hempfield Township. The restaurant, not yet identified by mall owner J.J. Gumberg Co., will join two other new tenants, one in place and another due to open soon, at the nearly full 346,000-square-foot shopping center on Route 30 east of Greensburg. “Work to tear down the movie theater started about four days ago, and they hope to have that done by about Dec. 19 and then start rough grading,” said Tilda Comstock, a spokeswoman for Pittsburgh-based Gumberg. “If all goes well, the restaurant should be under construction in the spring.” The theater, which had been operated by Carmike Cinemas Inc., closed in 2000 after the Carmike chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Comstock described the planned restaurant as an “upscale, family-oriented restaurant,” and a concept that is not yet established in this area. The facility will occupy about 14,500 square feet, she said. Plans for the restaurant come after the recent opening of the Teddy Bear Construction Zone at Eastgate. That outlet, owned by Nancy NcNutt, Brian W. Brentzel and Janet Brentzel, offers customers the chance to build their own teddy bear and choose clothing outfits from a selection available. The family owned business occupies about 1,700 square feet near the Jo-Ann Fabrics outlet. Due to open soon at the shopping center is a full-service Oriental restaurant. That outlet, which will occupy about 2,900 square feet, also is not yet named.
