Father speaks of fears for Guantanamo son

The father of a British man held at Guantanamo Bay said Monday that solitary confinement was destroying his son's mental health. Azmat Begg told BBC Radio that his son could be "a cabbage" by the time his case reached the U.S. Supreme Court. Mozzam Begg, 36, was arrested in Pakistan in January 2002 and has been held in isolation at the military base ever since. "From what I gather from different sources, it looks that he is deteriorating very badly and things are going badly physically and mentally," said his father. "He has been there nearly three years in solitary confinement without even a guard, just being watched by a camera," he continued. "It is a long, long battle, which I can fight but I don't think he can survive that long. "By that time, mentally he will be finished. He won't be able to say anything. He will be a cabbage." Azmat Begg said he has finally been granted an appointment at the U.S. Embassy after months of requesting a visa so he can visit his son. Four British men released from Guantanamo Bay in March are currently suing the U.S. government for alleged torture and other human rights violations. The Pentagon has denied the allegations. © Copyright 2004 by United Press International
