High school dropouts who want to become prepared to take their GED Tests can still register for night classes offered at Fayette County Community Action Agency Inc.'s Education Center in Connellsville.
The classes will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday beginning March 7 and continuing through May 19 in Rooms 204 and 205 at the Greater Connellsville Community Center, 201 E. Fairview Ave.
New student orientation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday; 9 a.m. to noon Friday; and 3 to 6 p.m. March 10. Students are required to attend one of the orientation sessions.
"We are prepared to enroll 30 students and have them ready for testing within the next three months," said Sue Wagner, FCCAA's education project manager and a certified teacher.
Wagner said students must be 18 years of age or older and have officially withdrawn from high school to register for the classes.
GED testing takes place monthly, and the cost of the test is $60, Wagner said.
FCCAA's adult education program, which has operated for the past 28 years, focuses on education goals and offers people an opportunity to improve their lives.
"Students work to improve reading and math skills needed to past the Tests of General Educational Development, or what is commonly referred to as GED Tests," Wagner said. "With this credential in hand, many of our students are able to transition into post-secondary education or obtain a job."
Wagner said GED classes are very important because of the number of high school dropouts in Fayette County.
According to data compiled by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, a total of 226 students dropped out of the six school districts in Fayette County in the 2007-2008 school year -- the last year that statistics are available.
Day classes are offered at the Greater Connellsville Community Center and at FCCAA's Family Service Center located at 140 N. Beeson Blvd., Uniontown.
The education classes are offered free to the public. To register, call 724-626-READ or 724-626-1070.
