MOUNT PLEASANT – The Mount Pleasant Glass Festival has been a popular event for the last 16 years and coordinators are working hard to make the 17th annual event even more popular.

One of the ways they hope to do that is by adding a Festival of Lights parade on Friday evening.

According to Jeff Landy, co-chairman of the event, they will still have their usual parade on Saturday, but the Festival of Lights parade will be completely different.

Anyone who participates in the Festival of Lights parade must fall under one of four categories: An individual person, an automobile, a small truck (such as SUVs, pick-ups or vans no longer than 22 feet) or a float at least 12 feet in length.

The catch• Every single item in the parade must be outlined and wrapped with lights.

According to Landy, floats must have a minimum of 5,000 lights, individuals must be wrapped in no less than 200 lights, automobiles are required to have at least 1,000 lights and anyone participating in the small truck category must have no fewer than 2,000 lights on their entry.

“This should be a highlight of the festival,” said Landy. “I think it’s a unique event in our area.”

Landy was vacationing at Disney World when he got the idea. “I always wanted to do another parade, but I wanted it to be different.”

Although the lights parade at Disney World just had floats, Landy researched the different lights parades around the country and chose his four categories.

“There’s a place in Texas that allows individuals to participate in the parade,” said Landy. He added that although there are just four categories for this year, they may expand in future years to include motorcycle and other categories.

“We wanted to have just a few categories and make sure we did this right before we got too crazy this year,” said Landy.

The sponsors for the parade are Frock Daycare in Mount Pleasant, Electroglass Products in Norvelt and the glass festival itself.

According to Landy, when he decided to have the Festival of Lights parade, he went to Jim Schmidt at Electroglass to find out the ins and outs of the lights and lighting systems that would be needed.

Included on the entry description list sent out recently, are power source options and Web sites for lights and battery packs.

The power source options include a generator, a 12-volt vehicle battery or a battery pack.
