Fiat Punto owner challenges speeding ticket

British law student Steve Lucas, accused of driving 115 mph in his Fiat Punto, challenged his arrest saying his car just could not that fast. The Liverpool Echo reported Lucas thought the ticket was a joke because he said his 1.2-liter engine was not capable of reaching 115 mph. Lucas hired former police officer Doug Boulton, who is a traffic consultant, to test his car's speed at a test track in Leicestershire. Boulton used satellite and computer technology and reported the car's maximum top speed was only 104 mph. In court, the prosecution dropped the speeding charge and Lucas pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention. He received three points on his license and paid $213 for the fine and court costs. "I was happy to put my hands up and admit that I was driving at 85 mph, but the idea that my car could go 115 mph was laughable," Lucus said. "I decided to fight it because I couldn't afford to have that on my record. It was a point of principle." © Copyright 2004 by United Press International
