Croatian actor Goran Visnjic, who stars in the U.S. TV series "ER," says he wants play imprisoned war crimes suspect Ante Gotovina.

Croatian director Antun Vrdoljak said although a film about Gotovina is still "an idea" at this point, he "definitely" plans to bring the project to fruition, the Independent reported Friday.

In "ER," Visnjic's character, Dr. Luka Kovac, lost his family during the Balkan war.

"Gotovina is a metaphor for today's Croatia," Vrdoljak said.

A United Nations war crimes court charged him in 2001 with orchestrating the killings and expulsions of Serbs from Croatia. He was arrested in Spain in 2005 and is awaiting trial before The Hague tribunal.

Many in Croatia regard Gotovina as a hero.
