Chicago Heights police say arrests are pending in the case of a first-grader who gave classmates bags of "candy" that turned out to be crack cocaine.

Authorities said they were searching for the boy's guardians, whom they believe dealt drugs out of their home. The traffickers told the boy the crack cocaine was candy, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Monday.

Police said someone hid about 40 packets of crack in the boy's book bag. "When he gets to school he finds them in his book bag and he knows this is 'candy' because this is what (people in his home) say it is. Then he started handing it out," Chicago Heights Deputy Police Chief Michael Camilli told the newspaper.

He said that arrests in the case were "pending."

School officials said no one was hurt in Friday's incident and all the bags of crack were recovered. They said the boy will not be disciplined because he didn't know what he was doing.
