Despite the lingering effects of the week's rain, Thursday's mild weather sparked some fishing. Lower Twin Lake was giving up trout to anglers using waxworms, mealworms and maggots.
• Loyalhanna Creek was flowing high and muddy, so no one has been fishing the delayed harvest section of the stream in recent days.
• Prince Gallitzin State Park's Glendale Lake has little left in the way of ice, but the extreme upper end of the lake, known as Slate Lick Branch, traditionally gives up perch, crappie, bluegill, and an occasional bullhead catfish at this time of year, said park ranger Bill Zollum. Anglers can gain access by parking on the western side of the Slate Lick Bridge and following the path that parallels the shoreline for several hundred yards. The area around the Prince Gallitzin Marina boathouse and docks are generally good for crappies, too.
• At Lake Erie, all of the lake's tributaries are open, but anglers have been seeing some of their best success fishing the lake at Trout Run. Water conditions have been high and muddy on Elk and Walnut creeks.
• Donegal Lake has not seen a lot of fishing pressure, but those venturing out have been picking up a few trout on Powerbait and natural baits.
• The outflow area below Yough Dam has been producing trout as well.
• There's been very little fishing going on along the Monongahela River this week because of the high water. It was flowing fast and chocolate all week.
• The Allegheny River likewise has been high and dirty, limiting fishing activity in most places.
• Canonsburg Lake and Virgin Run Dam have been getting some trout fishing pressure, but reports of catches have been spotty.
• Panfish have been providing some action at Pymatuning Lake, but its crappies have not yet turned on in big numbers. Much of the action has been occurring near the spillway.
• There was still snow on the ground in the Laurel Highlands Thursday, but anglers fishing Acme Dam with mealworms and waxworms were picking up some bluegills.
• Shawnee Lake in Shawnee State Park was largely open as of yesterday, but few people were fishing it.
• Higgins Run, a wild trout stream in Somerset County, was raging Thursday, flowing high and muddy over its banks, so no one was fishing it either.
