Marjorie Palcsey has been watching the bare branches from a decayed tree along Stewartsville Hollow Road in White Oak since winter and worrying about the phone lines those branches are resting on.

"I am so afraid those wires are going to collapse," Palcsey said. "All it will take is a good, strong storm and they'll come down and land on the road. It could kill someone."

Branches from several trees are braced by a covered wire owned by Verizon about half a mile from Lincoln Way.

After a call from Just Fix It, Verizon spokesman Lee Gierczynski said crews inspected the area and found a decaying tree on their lines, but does not plan to trim or remove the tree right away.

"The decaying tree appears to be in a stable position, 10 to 15 feet off the road and it is not an immediate safety concern," Gierczynski said. "The supervisor said they would monitor the area and they probably won't remove the tree as long as it is not affecting service."

Palcsey is not happy with Verizon's decision. She said she hopes company officials change their minds before tragedy forces them to.

"I'm still with my original opinion of the whole situation," she said. "The top is still decayed, and it still could be a traffic hazard."

Who's responsible? Hank Abbott, Verizon director of construction, 800-275-2355
