Center to close soon The Allegheny County PEMA/FEMA Disaster Recovery Center is tentatively scheduled to close Oct. 15. So far, nearly 700 flood victims have taken advantage of the clearinghouse for information on every available flood relief program. South Fayette Morgan Park and Koppers Field, both in South Fayette, are closed for the rest of the year due to flood damage. In addition, Haunting Season activities scheduled for Oct. 16 have been canceled. Cash or checks are being accepted by the flood victims relief fund. Plum Plum Council will consider cosigning a loan to help Plum Borough Athletic Association pay for $92,000 in damage to its fields, concession stand and equipment. Council could vote on the measure Oct. 11. Interim borough manager Maria Gingery said flood damage to roads, culverts and bridges totaled $585,000. That does not include overtime for borough employees or equipment to dredge the stream next to the borough building. Gingery said the borough is seeking federal and state aid to help cover the cost. South Park The Ladies Auxiliary of Library Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6664 is working with the Salvation Army to provide donations for South Hills flood victims. Cleaning items, nonperishable food, new toys, toiletries, new towels or sheets, gift certificates and other donations can be dropped off from 2 to 9 p.m. daily throughout October at the post on Pleasant Street in South Park. Phillips Natural Gas, Lowes Home Improvement, Conservation Consultants Inc., the plumbers unions and Salvation Army. Financial planning help The Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants has volunteers to assist flood victims with financial paperwork. The institute says flood victims must document all losses and never throw anything away without photographing or videotaping it or compiling a list of damaged items. CPAs will provide free assistance with preparing insurance claims and documenting losses.
