Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and the state Cabinet will support easing regulations governing felons who are seeking to regain the right to vote. The changes will be considered at the Cabinet’s next meeting in December, the Miami Herald reported Wednesday. Restoration of civil rights including the right to vote became a major issue in the run-up to the Nov. 2 general election when the state issued a list of thousands of potential voters who were considered ineligible. That list was eventually thrown out. The cabinet said Tuesday it will consider loosening rules that make it hard for most former felons to get their rights restored quickly after they are released from prison. It will also discuss providing more staff to consider individual cases, granting leniency for crimes committed long ago and to those convicted of lesser crimes. The Cabinet and the Clemency Board are comprised of Bush and the state’s elected officeholders — Attorney General Charlie Crist, Chief Financial Officer Tom Gallagher and Agricultural Commissioner Charles Bronson. © Copyright 2004 by United Press International
