Food fight: Veggie Wraps

Rochelle Hentges And Jessica Severs

Three restaurants. Two diners. One item. Everyone gets closer to their daily requirement of vegetables. Jess Severs: What do you mean there's no meat in a veggie wrap? Rochelle Hentges: This is a rarity for me. My veggies usually come with a side of butter or cheese. Beehive Coffeehouse 1327 E. Carson St., South Side, 412-488-4483, $5 Jess: Bonus points for the spinach-green wrap. Not that it added taste. Tofu is like a foreign language to me, so I didn't even recognize it at first, but the hard-boiled egg overwhelmed the scant ingredients. And could I have some leaf with my Romaine stems, please? Rochelle: I actually was excited about this concoction of hard-boiled eggs, tofu and lettuce in a spinach tortilla. But the tofu was spongy, the lettuce was all stems, and Jess got all the eggs. Still, if you dunk it in enough of the delightful peanut sauce, it's edible -- even good. Pittsburgh Deli Company 728 Copeland St.Shadyside412-682-3354$7.48 Jess: What a mess, but that's only because the veggies were nicely grilled, as veggies should be, and served warm in a thick tortilla with herbs baked in. Looks good, tastes good. Not too heavy on the taste, but mild and pleasant. Oh, and it comes with a pickle. Nice touch. Rochelle: This wrap definitely had the most veggies, and they benefitted from being roasted in balsamic vinegar. The artichokes, tomatoes and zucchini made this one stand out, although I could have done without the Muenster cheese. It was a little messy but well worth the extra napkins. Roly PolyFifth Avenue Place Food CourtDowntown$5.89 Jess: This submarine-sized wrap sank my battleship! Actually, as I sank my choppers into the lettuce-crammed behemoth, I was overcome by the overwhelming rawness of the mushrooms. I could easily just go gnaw on a garden ... if it weren't winter. Rochelle: This ginormous wrap boasted a variety of veggies, but it was mostly lettuce. I would have liked some of the mushrooms or onions to have been cooked. It was all a little too raw. It could have used more ranch dressing. Or butter. Or cheese. Anything with flavor.
