For their own benefit
Regarding Elizabeth Warren’s column “Don’t let Wall Street dictate congressional agenda” : Someone, please tell her that lobbyists, lawyers and “well-heeled clients” do not make laws. While the president can decree limited actions by himself, the president, the House of Representatives and the Senate work together to pass all laws in the United States. This includes taxpayer-funded bailouts and trade treaties.
Elizabeth Warren is part of this political class, collecting money from those lobbyists and corporations she decries.
Our Founding Fathers wanted to stop taxation without representation. Today’s leaders avoid taxation by authorizing billions (even trillions) of dollars in borrowed spending. They decide how much of our own money we get to keep and how much is confiscated to support their spending whims. Both Democrats and Republicans use their bully pulpits (and agencies such as the IRS) to disparage and marginalize groups such as libertarians or the tea party who point out the hypocrisy.
Politicians make promises only to get re-elected. Social Security is a pyramid scheme, Medicare and Medicaid are unsustainable and our medical care will soon join those other government programs that are overly complex, restrictive and financially unsustainable, even as the political class exempts themselves and their staffs from these programs.
So, Warren is correct; our government doesn’t work for the middle class. It works for the benefit of Warren and other members of the political class.
