It's a steep climb for about a half-mile to cheer on the purple and gold.
Ford City football fans who walk to games may have the luxury of a free ride this fall, if Town and Country Transit can get sponsors to fund shuttles up and down Ford City Hill Road.
"It'll be a free service up and down the hill," said Town and Country general manager Scott Kloes.
Town and Country is seeking sponsors for five Ford City home football games in order for the authority to provide a shuttle service from downtown to the high school stadium on Neale Avenue. The sponsorship for one game is $250, Kloes said, which would cover pay for the driver and vehicle maintenance.
Because of the authority's already tight financial status, sponsorships are the only way Town and Country can offer the service, Kloes said.
Authority board member John Lux Sr., Ford City's representative, brought up the potential for a shuttle during a regular meeting, citing safety concerns for those who walk Ford City Hill Road to and from games. Lux could not be reached for comment yesterday.
"It's the hill that's the real problem," Kloes said, adding that parking around the stadium can be scarce on game days. "The safety factor is important."
The shuttle would run as many times as needed from a small parking area at the southern end of Ford City near District Judge J. Gary DeComo's office to the high school stadium before and after games, Kloes said.
"We'll get a sign made up for the bus — 'This shuttle sponsored by whoever,'" he said.
If the shuttle is popular, Town and Country may begin offering two buses if sponsorships are available, he said. If the Sabers make the playoffs, shuttles could continue if sponsors are willing, he added.
The service is planned for only Ford City games currently, Kloes said, because of the potential safety hazard for those who walk to games.
