The Mon Valley will be represented at the annual Pittsburgh Underground Music Awards next month.
Monessen native Jonathan Bass, who goes by J. Bass, is seeking fan support through online votes to come home a winner at the competition.
The second annual Pittsburgh Underground Music Awards was designed to “celebrate and recognize the hard work that has been put into the underground music scene during the previous year,” organizers said.
This year's PUMAs will be held from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. June 28 at the Penn Hills Senior High School auditorium, 309 Collins Drive, Penn Hills.
Votes will be accepted at www.pghundergroundmusicawards.com now through midnight June 1. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony.
Bass, has been nominated for “Best Male Hip-Hop” performance and “Single of the Year,” for “The Winner is I.” The song is available for Purchase on iTunes, Spotify and Amazon. His music can also be found at www.reverbnation.com/JBASSTHEONE
Bass, a Ringgold High School graduate, said his faith in God is expressed through his music. He has been writing songs and recording music for over 15 years. Bass has performed in many different venues throughout Pennsylvania and West Virginia and cities such as St. Louis, Mo., and Baltimore, Md. Last year, he was nominated for “Best Christian Hip-Hop” performance.
Bass said he writes music that is “heart felt and inspirational.” The Jeannette resident said many of his lyrics are inspired from a devastating accident he was involved in when he was 7-years-old. Bass said a car struck him in Monessen, causing him with severe brain injuries.
“They said I would never walk, talk or eat again,” Bass said. After several years of therapy, hard work and support, Bass eventually recovered and was able to return to school and graduate.
He now enjoys pursuing his passion for music.
