The Franklin Regional School Board hired Matt Lebe to be the varsity wrestling coach Monday.

Lebe replaces Eric Mausser, who resigned from Franklin Regional to take a principal job at Mercer.

“It’s exciting, but it’s going to be a challenge,” Lebe said. “I’m replacing someone who did a great job building the program. The program and the wrestlers have high expectations.

“They’re great kids. I’ve been with the program the last few years, and they’re a hard-working group.”

Lebe was a standout football player and wrestler at Jeannette. The 2001 graduate was a PIAA champion his senior season. He went on to graduate from West Virginia, where he was an All-American wrestler.

He’s a physical education teacher at Jeannette and was the school’s former wrestling coach and athletic director.

“I know what these kids expect,” Lebe said. “Eric left a strong foundation. The wrestlers expect to win every time they’re on the mat.”
