Former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Verron Haynes appeared at the Allegheny County Courthouse this morning on charges that he wrote three bad checks totaling $70,000 to buy a 2001 Aston Martin.

Haynes, 30, of Georgia appeared for his pretrial conference and received a trial date of Sept. 16. The case is scheduled before Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey A. Manning.

Haynes is accused of purchasing the car from Monroeville car dealership A&L Motors on May 13, 2006, for $67,375. Haynes agreed to pay off the car by the end of 2006, but only made two payments totaling $7,650. He subsequently bounced three other checks to the dealership, according to a police affidavit.

A&L Motors sued Haynes last year in Common Pleas court in an attempt to get the money.

Haynes played with the Steelers from 2002-06 and briefly in 2007. He now plays for the Atlanta Falcons.
