Former U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan joined a five-way race for Congress, ending months of speculation about her future in politics.

Buchanan, a Republican from Fox Chapel, wants to challenge Rep. Jason Altmire, D-McCandless, according to Federal Election Commission records.

Altmire has represented Pennsylvania's 4th District since 2007 after he defeated Melissa Hart, a three-term Republican incumbent.

Buchanan is expected to face three fellow Republicans in the May 18 primary: Robert Clyde Klein, Keith J. Rothfus and John Steven Vinsick.

Candidates were permitted to begin circulating nominating petitions this week. The deadline to withdraw from the race is March 24.
