One hundred beginning researchers, including three from Penn State University and one from the University of Pittsburgh, were named Thursday by President Obama as recipients of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers.

It is the highest honor bestowed by the government on young professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers.

Gonzalo E. Torres of the University of Pittsburgh is conducting research for the National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services, and Adam D. Smith of Penn State is doing the same for the National Science Foundation.

Michael A. Hickner and Susan E. Parks, both of Penn State, are conducting research for the Department of Defense.

All four will receive up to a five-year research grant to further their study in support of critical government missions. They will receive their awards at a White House ceremony in the fall.
