Perfection is difficult to attain in any sport, but at the WPIAL individual rifle championships Thursday, four shooters were flawless. Zac Szabo, Joel Nuzum, Dan Sumney and Liz Leckie all shot a perfect 200-20x to share the individual championship at Dormont/Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen's Club. The interesting and improbable outcome put the WPIAL tiebreaker system to the test. Since all four first-place finishers didn't miss, their tie could not be broken. "You can't use tiebreaking procedures on a perfect score," WPIAL rifle chairman John Hartman said. "If we let them shoot another target, it will drag the competition out another three or four hours. We might have to consider that though." Szabo from Avella and Nuzum from McGuffey both claimed the championship as sophomores. Sumney and Leckie are seniors from Trinity High School. Coaches expected the match to be competitive because of a strong field of shooters. "It always feels good when your kids shoot well," Trinity coach John Husk said. "Everyone thinks they've got the best kids and it makes you feel good when they perform." Husk, who guided Trinity to its third consecutive WPIAL championship Tuesday, enjoys the unique diversity of his shooters, especially Leckie and Sumney. "You don't have to be the best athlete in the school," Husk said. "Sumney is a diabetic and Leckie is currently ranked first in her class. We can take anybody but it takes a lot of ability to shoot well." State qualifiers can post individual scores at their convenience on Tuesday or Wednesday at the Frazier Simplex Senior Rifle Club in Scenery Hill. Those scores will be compiled to name a state champion.
