Fox Chapel moves on in tennis playoffs
Fox Chapel’s boys tennis team is headed to the WPIAL Class AAA final four.
The Foxes (15-0) defeated North Allegheny, 4-1, on Wednesday at Fox Chapel High School. They move on to today’s semifinals, where they’ll face Shady Side Academy 1at p.m. at Lakevue Racquet Club in Valencia.
Fox Chapel hopes to continue its march toward an undefeated season.
“I can’t tell you how often we’ve gone to the semis before undefeated, but we have done it ,” Fox Chapel coach Dave Prevost said. “Sometimes going into the semis undefeated is the kiss of death. We have to be ready no matter who we play.”
Ford City 6, West Shamokin 1
Luke Szymanski struck out nine and hit a two-run triple to lead Ford City (11-5, 8-4) past Section 3-AA and Armstrong County rival West Shamokin (8-10, 4-8). The win clinches second place in the section for the Sabers. Carter Haponski belted a leadoff home run in the fifth inning. The senior second baseman scored three times for the Sabers. Ford City freshman Dylan Wolsonovich went 3 for 3, with one RBI and two runs scored.
Deer Lakes 9, Freeport 2
James Connelly struck out 10, as Deer Lakes (9-7, 5-7) defeated Freeport (7-10, 5-7) in a Section 3-AA game. Connelly added a double and four RBI, and Joey Babincak had two RBI.
For Freeport, Ryan Siegel was 3 for 4.
Leechburg 21, Elderton 1 (5 inn.)
Leechburg (4-11, 4-8) finished its season on a high note by scoring 11 runs in the fifth inning and defeating Elderton (5-13, 4-8) in a Section 4-A game. The game was stopped after five innings because of the WPIAL’s 10-run rule.
Shady Side Academy 5, Riverview 1
Ben Cander hit a two-run homer to lead Shady Side Academy (13-6, 10-2) past Riverview (9-9, 6-6) in a Section 4-AA game. Shady Side and Riverview have qualified for the WPIAL playoffs.
Springdale 15, St. Joseph 0 (4 inn.)
Bret Basilone hit a leadoff home run in the first inning, as Springdale (16-2, 11-1) defeated St. Joseph (4-11, 4-8) in a Section 4-A game. Mike Rovnanik had three RBI, and winning pitcher Brian Zoller added two RBI for the Dynamos.
Plum 13, Fox Chapel 8
Courtney Keene and Casey Garrity each drove in three runs, as Plum (8-10) defeated Fox Chapel (3-13) in a non-section matchup.
Highlands 4, Freeport 3
Janelle Mosovsky singled in Brittany Cieslinski with one out in the bottom of the seventh to lift Class AAA Highlands (4-14) over Class AA Freeport (9-9) in a non-section game. Earlier in the inning, Kristen Klein hit a triple and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.
Kittanning 9, Springdale 0
Senior Megan Matthews’ three-run home run lifted Kittanning to a non-section win.
Liz Lambert picked up the win for Kittanning (12-6) in the team’s regular-season finale. Lambert also doubled.
