No school again Tuesday for Kerr Elementary
Kerr Elementary School will be closed again tomorrow, for the third consecutive day, due to a mold issue.
Fox Chapel Area School District announced just before 3 p.m. that classes are canceled for the Kittanning Pike school. Mold was discovered last week in three rooms at Kerr and was visually detected in each of the rooms.
A message was emailed to all parents, with Superintendent Gene Freeman saying district personnel and a mold remediation company have been working in the school since Sept. 13 to perform corrective measures in the areas affected.
There is no school district-wide on Wednesday, Sept. 19, for fall break. Kerr students are expected to return to class on Thursday.
“We anticipate being able to do final air quality testing on Wednesday and that the students will be able to be back in school on Thursday,” Freeman said.
Freeman advised people that there may not be air conditioning available at Kerr on Thursday or Friday. If additional closures are necessary, district officials will send an announcement on the district’s robocall/email/text.
Freeman said the district has contacted the state Department of Education to determine if the days missed will need to be made up. It was not immediately clear what the state’s position will be.
“Please know that we have been working diligently on this issue, and we will not allow the students and staff to return to the building until we are certain that it is completely safe,” he said.
