A $25,000 state grant will help pay to enhance the James Sharp Landing in Sharpsburg, continuing upgrades to the borough's “little gem,” officials said.

Earned through the Department of Community and Economic Development, the grant will be used to pave the 13th Street entrance, add dock space and lighting and improve accessibility related to the federal Americans with Disabilities Act. It will be coupled with a $38,000 grant from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

“We plan to continue to improve and enhance the landing so that residents and visitors alike can enjoy the area,” said council President Karen Pastor.

She cited increased dock space for easier boating and improved lighting for added security.

“This will not only bring more traffic to the boat ramp, but to our business district and to Sharpsburg in general.”

At the same time, it was announced that Riverfront 47 developers received $250,000 from the state Greenways, Trails and Recreation program for riverfront planning that will have a direct environmental, safety and economic impact on Sharpsburg. The Mosites Co. intends to bring a commercial campus of housing, light industry and shopping to the 1.5-mile stretch of shorefront from Sharpsburg to Aspinwall.

Mayor-elect Matt Rudzki said he hopes that the funding spurs the R47 group to begin responsibly developing the land in Sharpsburg, even if the proposed commercial development is still years away from being shovel-ready.

He said Sharpsburg is committed to upgrading and adding amenities to the landing to enhance the experience and make it more accessible to all visitors.

“James Sharp Landing is a gem on the Allegheny and we are lucky to have such a great outdoor space,” Rudzki said. “Used by residents and outdoor enthusiasts alike, during the summer months the landing is almost always at capacity.”
