Washington Township police are investigating reports of a shooting Saturday on the property of the Fox Run Equine Center, near Apollo.

The shooting was reported at approximately 4 p.m. at the 798 Fox Road property, owned by Dr. John M. Leonard.

By early evening, police cars could still be seen at a residence above the stables and veterinary office Leonard operates, off Route 66.

Late last night, police were still not releasing details about the incident.

A man on the property, who declined to give his name for publication, said he heard shots fired but that the rural area is so popular with hunters he thought nothing of it until police cars arrived at the scene.

Dennis and Audrey O'Hara walk their black Labrador retriever, Molly, along Fox Run Road, near with their Walker Road home, each night. They heard sirens yesterday, but assumed they were in response to an accident.

The couple said they'd lived in the area for nine years.

"It's a quiet little community," Dennis O'Hara said.

Their properties are far enough apart that the Leonards and the O'Haras friendship was largely confined to waving hello to each other.

"When we were building our house," Dennis O'Hara said, "they came up and introduced themselves. They said stop up and let our kids ride the horses sometime."

The couple did not know how many people live in the hillside residence, or if Leonard has children.

The home was the scene of a fire three years ago, when propane tanks caught fire, which spread through a garage and the residence on Sept. 30, 2004.

At the time, the home's owners were identified as Dr. Jack and Kathy Leonard.

According to its Web site, the equine center is a 24-hour medical surgical center, with five veterinarians on staff. Calls to the center last night were forwarded to an answering machine.
