The WPIAL AAA track tournament began on May 2 and Fox Chapel was matched up against Central Catholic, Laurel Highlands and Hempfield.The Foxes beat Central Catholic by a score of 98.5 to 42.5 and Laurel Highlands 83 to 58 but fell to Hempfield, 88 to 62. Brandon Mitchell won the 110 hurdles, Ethan Martin won the 1,600 and 3,200 and Brian Papich finished first in the high jump.The Foxes competed in the Baldwin Invitational on Friday and turned in several notable performances. For the girls, Meg Kirk took eighth in the high jump.
On the boys side, Papich was fourth in the long jump and high jump, Ethan Martin was fourth in the mile and 3,200, Connor Whelan took third in the 1,600 and seventh in the 3,200, Mitchell was fourth in the high hurdles, Arjun Mukherjee placed eighth in the high hurdles and Mike Mawhinney was eighth in the 400.The Foxes also competed in the Pine-Richland Invitational last week.Dave Zimmerman was fifth in the high hurdles and second in the 300 hurdles, Jimmy Humphrey was seventh in the 3,200 and, for the girls, Emma Slevin was eighth in the 1,600."We had some great performers this week," FC coach Tom Moul said. "At Baldwin, Connor Whelan medaled in the 1,600 and 3,200 while Ethan medaled in the mile and 3,200. He made the state qualifying time in the 3,200 and he's seriously approaching the school record that was set in 1980.
As far as Pine-Richland, Dave Zimmerman medaled in both hurdle events. He usually gets outshined by Brandon and Arjun, but both of those guys were at Baldwin and Dave took the opportunity to medal in both of his events."Shady Side Academy also competed at Pine-Richland. Dennis Briggs finished eighth in the 100 and seventh in the 200, Tyler Petrucelli came in fifth in the 400 and Reggie Mitchell finished third in the long jump.
For the girls, Emily Lamm won the 1,600 and finished fifth in the 800, Rebekah Tesfamariam was third in the 3,200, Tarah Wright finished seventh in the 300 hurdles, and Kelcei Edmonds came in second in the shot put and eighth in the discus.
