Credit should be given to state Reps. James Casorio and John Pallone for their effort to pass a bill to make residents of large, thriving communities like Hempfield pay for their own police coverage (” State police protection may come with price ,” July 2 and PghTrib.com).
Why should struggling Pennsylvanians’ state tax dollars have to pay for police service that thriving communities are perfectly capable of paying⢠Hempfield is not a distressed community.
Small boroughs such as Irwin and North Irwin have enough pride in their communities to provide local police coverage for their residents, as should Hempfield and other large towns.
The Trib’s coverage came from the perspective of the communities in question. So what?
Of course they like being charity cases, if it means low taxes. It’s time for them to stand on their own, grow up and quit riding on the coattails of the rest of the Pennsylvania taxpayers. What happened to personal accountability?
