The Freeport Area School Board has hired Leechburg Area Superintendent Ian Magness as its new superintendent. He is tentatively slated to start Nov. 1.
His starting annual salary at Freeport Area will be $139,000 in a five-year contract.
Freeport Area began its search when Chris DeVivo left in August to take the superintendent job in the Armstrong School District.
Freeport Area's program director, Larry Robb, is acting superintendent.
Magness just completed the first year of a five-year contract with Leechburg Area in July.
He could not be reached for comment Wednesday evening.
Magness, 36, previously served as assistant superintendent in the Blairsville-Saltsburg School District. He also worked as a social studies teacher at Franklin Regional High School and was principal in the Mars Area and Apollo-Ridge school districts.
He grew up in Allegheny Township and is a 1997 graduate of Kiski Area High School.
Lucovich said Magness brings a variety of experience that will be valuable at Freeport Area.
“He's energetic, enthusiastic, and he brings a whole different realm of experience that we were looking for,” Lucovich said. “We wanted someone with a variety of experience in education, athletics, as well as a superintendent.”
