France has launched a new steering committee to create a European numeric library capable of rivaling Internet superstar Google. Created by French Culture Minister Renaud Donnedieu du Vabres, the committee tacitly aims to create a system that is "complementary" to, rather than rivaling, Google, in the famous French spirit of "cultural diversity." The committee includes representatives from five European states, a hodgepodge of French ministers and half a dozen prominent French experts in areas ranging from political science to telecommunications, according to a report published Thursday in Le Figaro newspaper. They are tasked with researching what has already been done by other European libraries in terms of digital technology. They are also expected to come up with a public-private partnership plan for the European library within six months. © Copyright 2005 by United Press International
