The French Foreign Ministry has confirmed that a French reporter and her Iraqi assistant have gone missing in Iraq, the BBC reported Friday.

Florence Aubenas, 43, is highly regarded for her coverage of conflicts in Rwanda, Kosovo, Algeria and Afghanistan.

Aubenas, who works for the daily Liberation newspaper, arrived in Iraq Dec. 16 and has been missing since Wednesday, when she was last seen in Baghdad.

Iraqi militants released two French journalists in December after holding them for four months.
