To the Editor: I have been writing letters to the editors of various newspapers and magazines for the past several years. I have even had letters published in national magazines. It seems that all my efforts up to now have been unrecognized. Now, however, I have finally received my first crank letter! I would like to share it with your readers. The writer (unnamed) is apparently a former Ringgold student, though it doesn't seem that he/she profited from his/her experience. The letter follows, complete with its errors, both grammatical and orthographic. In case the writer of the letter reads this letter, "orthographic" refers to spelling. "Dear Mr. Brna, I just couldn't take it any longer and not knowing your exact address I hope this letter found its way to you. Do you have nothing better to do than write your little letters criticizing everyone within shouting distance, whether your right or wrong you're a no-it-all. My neighbors and I have bets on who writes the most letters you or Mya Patch. If you are so qualified on the school board, sewage authority and whatever it is you write about maybe you should get your lazy * * * off your couch and put your money where your mouth is and run for something. Lastly I went to school with your children and maybe you should put in as much time with them as you do writing these letters. GET A LIFE!" The letter ends here. For some strange reason, the writer did not sign his/her name. It gives me great pleasure to know that someone (even if he/she refuses to sign his/her name) actually reads my letters. I was afraid that no one did, however the writer of the crank letter not only reads my letters but feels so strongly about what I say, that he/she could not pass up the opportunity to let me know that he/she does. I thank him/her for his/her interest. For the sake of the bets with the neighbors, Maya (not Mya) Patch has been writing letters longer than I have, so whoever bet on her wins. William F.
