A faulty gasket was responsible for a radioactive water leak from a tanker truck en route from California’s San Onofre Power Plant to a disposal site in Utah. Dane Finefrock, Utah’s director of radiation control, told the San Diego Union-Tribune the defective parts have been replaced. There has been no decision on whether penalties will be imposed for the three-gallon spill. The wastewater seeped into two areas at a truck stop in Parowan, Utah. The contaminated materials have been removed, said Ray Golden, a spokesman for San Onofre. Some 9,000 gallons wastewater was being transported by Triad Transport Co. in two trucks under a contract with Energy Solutions. The tanker was leased from Eurotainer of Houston. Golden speculated the leak could have been caused by a change in air pressure when the trucks reached the 6,600-foot altitude, the Union-Tribune said. © Copyright 2006 by United Press International
