Actor Richard Gere and Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi danced for reporters and agreed the European Union should continue to ban Chinese arms sales. The prime minister inspired the impromptu ballroom effort in Tokyo Tuesday with the question, “Shall We Dance,” a reference to Gere’s new movie, the BBC reported. Gere insisted on leading as the two danced briefly and laughed. Gere, a longtime advocate of improved human rights in Tibet, said Monday he and the Japanese prime minister oppose the European Union plan to lift a ban on arms sales by China. China’s crackdown on Tiananmen Square protesters sparked the EU ban. © Copyright 2005 by United Press International
