Giant Eagle ranks high on top retailers’ list

Giant Eagle Inc. ranked highest among retailers headquartered in Western Pennsylvania on the National Retail Federation's latest list of top 100 companies, detailed in the trade group's Stores magazine.

The O'Hara-based supermarket chain was No. 39 on the list, based on 2009 sales. Giant Eagle's sales in its 372 stores totaled $8.1 billion, up 1.3 percent from 2008. Profit figures for the privately held company were unavailable.

Dick's Sporting Goods Inc. of Findlay was No. 72 with $4.41 billion in sales, up 6.8 percent, for its 510 stores. American Eagle Outfitters Inc. was No. 97 with $2.72 billion, up 0.3 percent, for its 1,010 stores. Wal-Mart, Kroger and Target topped the list.
