Giel’s arm, bat lead Shady Side to win
Zach Giel allowed only three hits while striking out 10, and he added five RBI to lead Shady Side Academy (15-1, 9-0) past Steel Valley (6-7, 4-4), 16-4, on Tuesday in Section 4-AA. Zach Jones had a double and five RBI, and Brian Nickel was 3-for-3 with two RBI. Shady Side Academy, the No. 1 team in the Tribune-Review Class AA rankings, has won eight games in a row. It has outscored its opponents, 102-29, in that stretch.
Serra Catholic 15, Elderton 0 (3 innings) — Tyler Kugler, Oliver Girman and Avery Sandor each contributed a double to lead Class A No. 1 Serra Catholic (14-1, 7-0) to a Section 5-A victory against Elderton. Serra has scored 10 or more runs in 10 of its 14 victories this season.
Derry 9, Greensburg Salem 3 — Led by Nathan Kohuth’s three-run triple, Derry (8-6, 5-4) rallied for four runs in the fifth inning to upset Class AAA No. 2 Greesnburg Salem (11-2, 8-2) in a Section 2 game.
Greensburg Central Catholic 15, Wilkinsburg 0 (3 innings) — Chris Tamasy hit a RBI triple in a the first inning to ignite a nine-hit attack for GCC (6-4, 4-2) in a Section 4-AA victory against Wilkinsburg.
Jeannette 11, Vincentian 1 (6 innings) — Winning pitcher Brett Elliott hit a pair of doubles for Jeannette (9-2) as it rolled to a nonsection victory over Vincentian (4-3).
Latrobe 3, Penn-Trafford 1 — Alexa Larkin struck out 13 and gave up one run on three hits to lead the No. 5 Wildcats (13-3, 8-0) to a Section 1-AAAA victory against rival Penn-Trafford. Latrobe has won eight games in a row.
Bishop Canevin 13, Northgate 0 (5 innngs) — Sophomore pitcher Jamie Kertes picked up her 25th career victory and 11th this season, as Class AA No. 3 Bishop Canevin (11-2, 10-1 in Section 1-AA) rolled to a victory against visiting Northgate (1-11, 0-10). Kertes surrendered just one hit while striking out nine, and Amber Forrisi provided the offense with three hits, inlcuding a double.
Perry 13, Schenley 2 — Winning pitcher Kelsey Freyermuth was 2-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBI, leading Perry (4-1, 4-1) to a City League victory against Schenley (0-6, 0-5). Kelsey Squelch went 3-for-4 with four RBI for Perry.
Laurel Highlands 9, Southmoreland 5 — Laurel Highlands (4-9, 4-5) rallied with seven runs on six hits in the top of the seventh inning to upend Southmoreland in a Section 2-AAA game. Laurel Highlands’ Rachel Georigana went 3-for-4, including hitting a pair of doubles.
Greensburg Salem 13, Uniontown 2 — With its Section 2-AAA victory over Uniontown, Greensburg Salem (9-6, 7-3) clinched a playoff spot for the sixth consecutive season. Andre’a Thompson hit a three-run triple in the third inning.
Yough 8, Derry 0 — Hope Sedunov hit a three-run homer in the third inning as No. 3 Yough (11-2, 9-1) blanked Derry in Section 2-AAA. Winning pitcher Nicole Sleith struck out 15.
Franklin Regional 10, Indiana 0 (5 innings) — Winning pitcher Ally Vreck struck out 10 as No. 1 Franklin Regional (15-0, 10-0) blanked Indiana in a Section 4-AAA contest. Vreck has a total of 137 strikeouts and an ERA of 0.24.
