Kudos to the River City Brass Band, conducted by James Gourlay, for its recent series of excellent “American Heroes” concerts honoring the countless men and women who have served, and continue to serve, in the various branches of the U.S. armed forces. Edgewood-based Boy Scout Troop 23 had the honor of serving as the color guard for the Nov. 13 show at Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland.

It was a deeply moving experience, from the opening “Star-Spangled Banner” to the final number, which included a dramatic reading of actual letters exchanged between a World War II soldier and his wife, culminating in the final letter sent from a commanding officer to the soldier’s wife, informing her of her husband’s heroic death. There was not a dry eye in the house!

After the concert, the Scouts helped collect donations for local veterans’ charities.

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, let us all remember to give thanks to the many veterans and active-duty men and women, and their families, who so generously sacrifice their time, talents and often their lives in service to our country.
