Glassport officials have added 10 streets and alleys to their spring paving project.
Council authorized the additional work Tuesday, bringing the total number of streets being paved to 24.
The 10 streets will cost $458,000.
The borough hired A. Folino Construction of Oakmont this year to pave 14 streets for $1.24 million, which was about $390,000 less than what had been budgeted.
Borough officials had said that the savings probably would allow them to add streets.
The project includes about a mile of Monongahela and North Monongahela avenues.
Work began Monday and Councilman Tom Bradley Jr. said 16 streets already have been milled. The work is expected to last six to eight weeks.
Council president Dave Kowalski said the Glassport Development Corp. is introducing a free concert series this summer at the borough honor roll along Monongahela Avenue.
Music at the Roll already has three acts booked. Times Square will perform June 13; Three Sides on July 11; and Tres Lads on Aug. 15.
There is talk of bringing in an Elvis impersonator for the series, Bradley noted.
The borough parks and recreation department is sponsoring a kickball league this summer for children ages 6-15 who live in the South Allegheny School district. Kowalski said registration will be May 6 from 5-7 p.m. at the Ninth Street ball field and May 9 from 10 a.m. to noon.
Kowalski said the cost of offering the kickball program is minimal for the borough. He said the insurance cost per child is only $2 or $3.
A borough cleanup is scheduled for Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Collection bins for household and yard wastes will be available behind the police station.
Borough secretary Nancy Piazza Whaby said volunteers are needed. Those interested should register at the borough building.
