Glassport adopts plan to replace police cars more often

Glassport police cars will be replaced more often.

Borough council adopted a rotation plan on Tuesday that calls for replacing the vehicles every 18 months.

The department has not had a formal replacement plan. Mayor Rosemary Bradley said having one should save the borough money in the long term.

No figures regarding how much might be saved were available at the meeting, but police Chief Cliff LaFever said newer cars will net better returns when they are traded in.

“By the time we're ready to rotate one out, it will still have some value on it,” he said.

The borough has three police vehicles.

LaFever said the cars and SUVs have around 150,000 miles on them when they are taken out of service. He said the borough usually can sell them only for scrap.

Under the new plan, he said vehicles will be replaced when they've been driven less than 75,000 miles.

The borough plans to retire a 2010 police vehicle immediately and replace it with a 2015 Ford Interceptor SUV. In mid-2016, it will trade in another model and replace it with a Ford sedan, according to the new plan.

Council approved the sale of its old street sweeper to Gulf Materials for $1,500. The borough purchased a new street sweeper for $250,000 this year.

Councilman Angelo Norelli reported the borough appears to be on track toward reaching its goal of recovering $150,000 in delinquent local taxes this year.

Norelli said the borough took in $19,406 in back taxes last month and has recovered $99,052 in overdue taxes so far this year.
