Chartiers Valley's Matty McConnell, head coach Tim McConnell and Megan McConnell embrace after defeating North Allegheny at the 2015 WPIAL Class AAAA boys basketball championship at the Petersen Events Center on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015.

Tim McConnell found himself standing on the “P” of the Pitt logo at Petersen Events Center Sunday, and that’s when the reality hit him.

“I can’t believe he made it from here,” Tim said of his son Matty’s dramatic shot to reach 2,000 career points. “A halfcourt shot swish at the buzzer at end of the third quarter in a championship game! Those are dreams come true right there.”

It was a dream-come-true weekend for the McConnell family, who owned the Pete.

St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin coach Maureen McConnell watched proteges Nicolete Newman and Cassidy Walsh lead Seton-La Salle to its third WPIAL Class AA girls title in four years.

IUP women’s coach Tom McConnell saw his son, Chris, help Indiana win Class AAA for its first WPIAL hoops title.

Pitt coach Suzie McConnell-Serio and her sister/assistant, Kathy, sat courtside for Pitt recruit Brenna Wise’s 35-point, 18-rebound performance to lead Vincentian to its fourth consecutive WPIAL Class A crown.

Then Matty’s heroics in a 34-point effort Saturday night led Tim to his sixth WPIAL championship at Chartiers Valley.

To top it off, T.J. McConnell helped Arizona win at Utah to clinch a share of the Pac-12 title Saturday night. And Suzie’s Panthers kept their NCAA tourney hopes alive with a comeback win over Clemson on Sunday.

For Tim, it replaced the misery of Dec. 23, when his Colts lost to Upper St. Clair and Arizona lost to UNLV.

“February 28 will go down in history as one of the best days for the McConnells,” Tim said. “Just being down there and being part of it, it was an amazing weekend for us. I couldn’t have written a better script.”
