Dear Editor:
Regarding the recent trial of Sgt. Charles Graner Jr.: He is being railroaded and scapegoated by President George Bush, the news media, members of the CIA and FBI, high ranking military officers, giving immunity to yellow-bellied members and comrades to get lighter sentences. He was tried and convicted by the media long before he was to be tried. Also, witnesses were not allowed to testify.
Several Army officers would not testify, claiming the Fifth Amendment. The Uniform Code of Military Justice says all members of the military are subjected to take orders and can be imprisoned for failure to do so and can be shot for desertion and treason.
Officers who gave orders that these crybaby prisoners be softened up, now are running like rabbits to disassociate themselves from this so-called scandal to cover up their backsides. What yellow-bellies!
In the past, is was all right for Americans to be tortured by the Germans, the Japanese and Russians. But we are not allowed to retaliate; talk about a double standard. What about these Arabs and Iraqis beheading people⢠Nothing much is ever said about that.
Sgt. Graner was only following orders from chicken-hearted officers and a clandestine torture square. It also appears Sgt. Graner should have gotten a better attorney.
Jack Baird,
Dawson
