The Green Tree Police Department is warning residents of what it's calling an IRS telephone scam.

Chief Colin Cleary said the department has received a number of complaints from people who said they received calls from someone identifying himself as an IRS agent and threatening them with legal action unless they make an immediate payment.

Cleary advises residents that the IRS will never start an investigation or action by telephone.

People who have received such a call should not provide any information but hang up and contact the department by calling 911.
